SDSB Dean Publishes His Latest Book, ‘Motivation in Saudi Arabia: An Investigation into the Higher Education Sector’

Monday, December 11, 2017

Dr. Jawad Syed, Dean and Professor of Organisational Behaviour, Suleman Dawood School of Business (SDSB) has published his latest book ‘Employee Motivation in Saudi Arabia: An Investigation into the Higher Education Sector.’ The book has been published by Palgrave Macmillan, 2018.

Co-written with Dr. Rodwan Hashim Mohammed Fallatah, this book investigates the relevance of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs as a theory of motivation, whilst taking into account variances in culture and individual experiences and perspectives. Focusing on higher education, the book responds to the call for providing alternative conceptual models, other than those originating from the Anglo-Saxon world. The book uses the case of Saudi Arabia to understand motivation in a collectivist, highly religious and conservative society of the Middle East. Providing empirical findings from a study carried out at two Saudi universities differing in their religious outlook, this book reveals a hierarchy of needs that is significantly different from the theory proposed by Maslow. Religion, culture and gender are explored in detail as the study investigates the relevance of Maslow’s theory in a region that is of growing interest to policy-makers and practitioners in North America and Europe.

Comprising eight chapters, the book may be of particular interest to scholars, practitioners, policymakers, instructors, and students (in formal and executive education) in fields as diverse as human resource management, employee motivation and performance, leadership and change, higher education management, cross-cultural management, and diversity management.

The book has received promising reviews by some of the top scholars in the field including Professor Eddy Ng (Dalhousie University), Professor Alain Klarsfeld (University of Toulouse), and Professor Beverly Metcalfe (American University of Beirut). The reviews on the publisher’s website can be perused here.

The book is also available on Amazon and can be viewed here.
