Syed Babar Ali’s extraordinary life has a wealth of lessons to offer all of us. The founding Pro Chancellor of LUMS, has generously documented these lessons in his book, Learning from Others, and now will be sharing experiences from his life in the form of an upcoming video series, called Conversations with Syed Babar Ali.

For this special session of LUMS Live, Syed Babar Ali will be joined by Dr. Arshad Ahmad, Dr. Sadaf Aziz, and Dr. Suleman Shahid, and will share with us the world of learnings from his professional and personal journey that he has gained from his friends, family and colleagues.

Syed Babar Ali

A renowned figure in the business community, Syed Babar Ali has been the guiding spirit behind LUMS. A former President of the World Wildlife Fund, he was elected to this year’s class of the prestigious American Academy of Arts & Sciences. Recognised for his immeasurable contributions to education, advancing the public good and promoting social equity in Pakistan, Mr. Ali has been acknowledged in the category of ‘Business, Corporate, and Philanthropic Leadership'. Syed Babar Ali’s extraordinary achievements as an entrepreneur, mentor, leader and philanthropist have left a lasting footprint across Pakistan.

Dr. Arshad Ahmad

Prior to his current role as Vice Chancellor, LUMS, Dr. Arshad Ahmad served as Vice Provost, Teaching and Learning, and Director of the MacPherson Institute at McMaster University in Canada. Dr. Ahmad completed his MBA and subsequently a PhD in Psychology at McGill University, won a lifetime 3M National Teaching Fellowship in 1992 and was a professor of finance at Concordia and McMaster Universities. His research interests are in student evaluations of teaching, approaches to teaching, teaching philosophies and student partnerships.

Dr. Sadaf Aziz

One of Shaikh Ahmad Hassan School of Law’s founding faculty members, Dr. Aziz has taught in the areas of Jurisprudence and Labour Law. Her research focuses on issues such as the interplay between Islamic and secular legality, the political impact of rule of law narratives and is broadly situated within the field of law and society. She has authored, The Pakistani Constitution; A Contextual Analysis (Hart Publishers). Dr. Aziz received her doctorate from the University of Melbourne. She has held visiting fellowships at the universities of Cambridge, Michigan, Oxford and NYU.

Dr. Suleman Shahid 

Dr. Shahid’s research focuses at the intersection of design, technology and wellbeing with applications to assistive technologies to enhance the quality of life of persons with disabilities, and persons with mental health conditions, as well as learning technologies for children (child-computer interaction) and human-computer interaction for development (HCI4D/ICT4D). Since 2009, he has been offering consultancy and training services in the areas of service design and user experience (UX) design and strategy. Dr. Shahid received his PhD in Human-computer Interaction in 2011 from Tilburg University, the Netherlands and PDEng (Professional Doctorate in Engineering) in 2007 in User System Interaction programme from Eindhoven University of Technology, the Netherlands.
