Dr. Ummad has completed his MS in Money, Finance, and Governance from University Lyon II, France, and then his Ph.D. from University of Strasbourg, France. Prior to his academic career, he was part of the Monetary Policy Department of the State Bank of Pakistan, Karachi. He has also served as the director of the Beaconhouse Institute of Public Policy. 

Dr. Ummad has published research on issues related to monetary policy, governance issues like the informal economy and corruption, performance constraints of firms in developing countries, and women empowerment. He advocates the use of scientific evidence in solving the financial and economic complexities of modern life. His research has been published in respected peer-reviewed journals like World Development, Economic Systems, Economic ModellingInternational Journal of Conflict Management, and The World Economy.
